Spanning 81 hectares, the Johannesburg Botanical Gardens serve as one of the city’s most important green lungs – a tranquil sanctuary in the heart of urban life. Originally set aside in 1969, the land was once little more than open veld, used as a sports field and golf driving range, with barely a tree in sight. Today, it has transformed into a lush, landscaped haven featuring expansive grassy lawns, shaded by a variety of mature trees. The gardens are a favourite retreat for walkers, runners, picnickers, dog walkers and nature lovers, offering a peaceful escape from the city’s bustle.
