The 81-hectare Botanical Garden is one of Johannesburg’s essential green lungs. Originally designated in 1969, the land was once a sports field and golf driving range, characterised by bare veld and a lack of trees. Today, it features expansive grassy spaces dotted with trees, providing a welcoming environment for runners, picnickers, and dog walkers. The garden also hosts seasonal concerts and kite-flying competitions, adding to its lively atmosphere. Visitors can explore its specialised gardens, including the Shakespeare Garden, the Rose Garden, the Herb Garden, a Hedge Demonstration Garden and the main arboretum, which showcases plant and tree groupings from South Africa and around the world. The gardens present a visually appealing mix of indigenous and exotic flora, all set against well-maintained lawns with a scenic view of the 7.5-hectare Emmarentia Dam. Dating back to the turn of the century, the dam is a popular spot for canoeing and boating. Additionally, the garden features a tea pergola and a floreum, offering space for meetings, exhibitions, and shows. The dam is nourished by two smaller upstream dams, which serve as habitats for various aquatic bird species.
