Johannesburg, the vibrant heart of South Africa, is set to dazzle as Joburg Tourism partners with 4Racing to host the prestigious 2024 Betway Summer Cup. Scheduled for Saturday, 30 November at Turffontein Racecourse; this year’s event is themed “Silks in the City”, blending high-stakes horse racing with urban elegance.
Joburg Tourism CEO, Thandubuhle Mgudlwa, emphasises Joburg’s commitment to hosting world-class lifestyle events that drive economic growth and position Johannesburg as a premier destination for business and lifestyle tourism. “The Betway Summer Cup is not just an iconic horse race; it’s a celebration of Johannesburg’s vibrancy, energy, culture and potential. Lifestyle events like this highlight our destination’s ability to host global gatherings while increasing the number of new visitors and tourism spending – boosting our local economy and showcasing our unique charm,” says Mgudlwa.
Through its programmes, Joburg Tourism promotes the city as a dynamic hub for business, lifestyle tourism and entertainment. As Johannesburg’s largest horse racing event and Africa’s richest race, the Betway Summer Cup is a highlight of the South African sporting calendar. Taking place at the historic Turffontein Racecourse, it attracts approximately 10,000 visitors, including international jockeys, trainers and horse owners.
The event’s economic impact is significant, creating over 1,000 temporary jobs and employing nearly 960 permanent staff within the horseracing industry. It also provides opportunities for at least 30 local SMMEs, from arts and crafts vendors to food stalls, fostering economic inclusion.
“Beyond its thrilling races, the Betway Summer Cup promotes social cohesion and supports small businesses. It’s a testament to the destination’s resilience and innovative spirit,” Mgudlwa adds.
Known as the “People’s Race,” the Betway Summer Cup offers stylish hospitality, top-notch facilities and a vibrant entertainment lineup. This year’s event will feature performances by Mi Casa, Ms Cosmo, Funk It Up, Ricky Tyler and Gigi – promising to be an unforgettable mix of racing excitement and social celebration. Attendees can also enjoy a fashion showcase, blending the tradition of racing silks with Johannesburg’s distinctive urban chic style.
The 2024 Betway Summer Cup is more than just a sporting event; it’s a celebration of Johannesburg’s identity as a global destination of opportunity and innovation. “As we end the Spring to Summer season, we invite everyone to experience the magic of Johannesburg at Turffontein Racecourse on 30 November,” Mgudlwa concludes.
