As part of its commitment to fostering youth development and supporting small businesses in the tourism sector, Joburg Tourism Company recently hosted a threeday training programme in collaboration with UNISA’s College of Human Sciences (CHS). Held at the Old Mutual Auditorium in the Joburg CBD from 4-6 March 2025, the initiative was fully subscribed, drawing over 200 participants, including 170 Joburg Tourism Ambassadors and 30 small, medium and micro enterprises (SMMEs).
The training equipped participants with essential skills in business administration, personal finance, workplace effectiveness, and financial management to enhance their competitiveness and sustainability in the tourism industry. Recognising the challenges faced by young people and small business owners in Johannesburg, the programme provided critical tools for growth, employment, and long-term success.
Joburg Tourism continues to invest in skills development and job creation within the tourism sector. Through the Tourism Ambassadors initiative, young people, many of whom have only completed Grade 12 and reside in townships such as Diepsloot, Soweto, Alexandra, Orange Farm and Roodepoort, receive short-term employment opportunities and training to improve their future job prospects. Similarly, the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality supports SMMEs by providing market access, legal compliance assistance, grading support for bed and breakfast establishments, and specialised training for tour operators, attractions, accommodation providers and tour guides.
The programme featured expert facilitators from UNISA, covering crucial topics tailored to both youth and small business owners. Sessions included business administration by Dr. Nthabeleng Mdhluli, personal finance by Dr. Nicky Tjano, finance for non-financial managers by Lize Terre Blanche, budgeting, cash flow and costing by Florence Mamaregane, as well as workplace effectiveness by Busisiwe Mahlangu.
Dr. Suvania Naidoo, UNISA’s Head of CHS Teaching, Learning, Continuing Education and Student Support, coordinated the facilitators and confirmed that attendance certificates will be issued to participants within two weeks upon verification of full session participation.
Joburg Tourism Chief Executive Officer, Thandubuhle Mgudlwa, emphasised the importance of equipping local youth and entrepreneurs with the necessary tools to thrive in the tourism sector. “This programme is a testament to our ongoing commitment to building an inclusive tourism economy. By empowering young people and small businesses with practical skills, we are not only fostering growth in the sector but also creating pathways for sustainable livelihoods.”
Joburg Tourism extends its gratitude to all facilitators, participants and UNISA for their collaboration in making this initiative a success. Future training sessions and development programmes will continue to be rolled out to strengthen the tourism industry and drive economic growth in the city.
