4th Avenue Parkhurst

4th Avenue Parkhurst

They say the only constant is change and the hustle and bustle of Parkhurst’s 4th Avenue is no exception. Established as a suburb in 1904, Parkhurst only saw the emergence of its first shops in 1938. In the 1970s, the area welcomed its first antique store, sparking a trend that eventually earned 4th Avenue the nickname “Antique Alley.” The mid-1990s marked another transformation with the opening of the first coffee shop, making Parkhurst one of the first suburban high streets to introduce street-side café dining. As the local restaurant culture flourished, some of the antique shops gradually gave way to a new wave of lifestyle and hospitality venues. Today, Parkhurst boasts an eclectic and glamorous mix of couture, interior design and dining. Whether it’s the charming antique stores, a variety of high-street boutiques, or the diverse array of eateries, the only thing that remains constant is the energy and vibrancy of 4th Avenue. With a unique ambience that sets it apart- and as an alternative to South Africa’s mall culture -Parkhurst’s main street offers both locals and visitors a safe, stylish and refreshing experience.
