Ellis Park Stadium

Situated in New Doornfontein, Johannesburg, Ellis Park Stadium is one of South Africa’s most iconic sporting venues. Originally constructed in 1928, the stadium has undergone multiple upgrades, including a major renovation in 1982, which expanded its seating capacity to almost 60,000. Ellis Park is best known for its rugby heritage, having hosted the 1995 Rugby World Cup Final, where the Springboks secured a historic victory over New Zealand. The moment was immortalised when Nelson Mandela, wearing a Springbok jersey, presented the trophy to captain Francois Pienaar, symbolising unity in post-apartheid South Africa. Beyond rugby, Ellis Park has also been a venue for international football matches, including fixtures during the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup and the 2010 FIFA World Cup. The stadium is home to the Emirates Lions rugby team and continues to host large-scale sporting events, concerts and corporate functions.
