The Farmer’s Market Yethu offers an experience rich in history, weaving together the legacy of 1912 with the vibrant spirit of modern Alexandra Township. Located at ERF 58, it encompasses the yard of Mdaweni – a place where broken trucks have awaited a mechanic since 1968, where rusty tools rest beneath the shade of Mulberry trees, carrying the memories of a bygone era. Alexandra has long been home to remarkable men and women who shaped the world, including Nelson Mandela, Gcina Mhlophe, Hugh Masekela, Graça Machel and Mdaweni himself—a prophet, mechanic, and activist who played a vital role in the township’s struggle for freedom. During the turbulent times of the Alexandra Massacre, Mdaweni not only helped lay to rest those who had fallen but also nurtured healing through water, medicinal herbs and the simple yet nourishing art of African cuisine. His cooking promoted longevity, disease prevention and strength. Today, the story of Alexandra lives on through the ‘Cultural Kitchen’ — a fusion of Basotho and Batswana traditional cuisine, accompanied by the rhythms of township music played from the trucks that once stood as silent witnesses to history.
