The Ferreira Mine Stope Museum, located beneath Standard Bank’s headquarters at 5 Simmonds Street, Johannesburg, offers a fascinating glimpse into South Africa’s early gold mining history. Discovered in 1986 during the building’s construction, the stope – an underground access tunnel -revealed remnants of Ferreira’s Mine, originally established by Ignatius Phillip Ferreira over a century ago. Preserved as an historical exhibit, the site showcases the pioneering spirit of Johannesburg’s gold rush era, allowing visitors to explore the original mining tunnels and gain insight into the city’s rich mining heritage.
