Gandhi Square, situated in Joburg’s Central Business District, is a historic and busy urban hub named in honour of Mahatma Gandhi. Once the site of Johannesburg’s first courthouse, the square has evolved into a bustling commercial and retail precinct, lined with shops, restaurants, cafés and banking institutions. At its centre stands a striking 2.5 metre statue of Gandhi, depicting him in his attorney’s robes, a tribute to his early years practicing law in Johannesburg. The square also serves as the main Metrobus terminal, making it a key transit point for commuters. With its blend of history, commerce and city life, Gandhi Square remains a popular destination for both locals and visitors, offering a unique glimpse into Johannesburg’s urban renewal and cultural heritage.
