Melville Koppies is a Johannesburg City Heritage Site and nature reserve, preserving the last untouched remnants of the city’s ridges before the gold rush of 1886. Its geology dates back three billion years and archaeological evidence suggests human activity here for over 500,000 years, including Iron Age kraal walls and a smelting furnace excavated in 1963.
