Born from a dream in 1929, the Alexander Theatre was envisioned by the Johannesburg Repertory Players (JRP) as a sanctuary for artistic expression – a space where creativity could thrive and stories could be shared. For decades, it stood as a beacon of theatre and performance, until its doors sadly closed in 1997, with the legendary Ipi Ntombi – a powerful musical depicting the journey of a mine worker – marking its final stage production. But as the city evolved, so did the theatre’s fate. A wave of transformation breathed new life into the area, leading to the Alexander Theatre’s inspiring rebirth, ensuring its legacy continues to shine in Johannesburg’s cultural landscape.
